SPECIAL COOLING UNIT FOR INDIA |
|
Ingersoll Rand is
launching a refrigerated transportation product
specially re-engineered for the Indian market. The
Thermo King (an Ingersoll Rand brand) B100 unit has a
cooling capacity of 1050W at 0 Celsius. Designed with
the realities of the Indian market, the B100 unit fitted
in with a container can be modeled on small reefer
trucks that can negotiate narrow lanes and neighborhoods.
The product is ready for transportation of medium
temperature cooling requirements. The B100 is an ideal
solution for India where small trucks typically run on
low horse power engines and do not have the capacity to
run a compressor directly. The B100 unit works with the
DC (direct current) power supply from the alternator
that is driven from the vehicle's engine and does not
need a separate fuel engine.
In the next few months the company will also launch a
product for applications that require temperatures below
0 Celsius which could serve a variety of applications
including special food, dairy, pharmaceuticals and
health.

INDIA INCREASES COLD STORE INVESTMENT |
|
The Indian government has confirmed plans to invest in 10-20
new cold stores. According to press reports, these could be
built during the next 12 months, each at a cost of about US$
500,000 to 900,000. This step should aid the development of
the country's fresh produce sector. Poor post-harvest
management and a lack of cold-chain facilities are said to
cost India's agricultural trade up to US$ 11 million each
year. |

service provider, has plans to build a distribution center
for frozen food in Thailand. The facility should have a

POWER FAILURES HINDER BANGLADESH COLD STORES |
|
The Bangladesh Cold Storage Association (BCSA) has asked the
government to ensure uninterrupted power supply to the cold
storage buildings for preservation of potatoes. Companies
are having difficulty bringing the temperature of the cold
stores under control because of frequent power failure and
low voltage. If the situation continues, the potatoes will
be damaged, causing huge financial losses. |

FROZEN VEGETABLES FRESHER THAN FRESH |
|
Frozen vegetables can be more nutritious than fresh
supermarket produce, according to a study by the British
Institute of Food Research. Fresh vegetables can lose up to
45 per cent of important nutrients by the time they reach
the table. Time spent in storage, transportation and on shelves
means it can be several weeks from the vegetables being
picked to being eaten. By contrast, produce frozen close to
the point of harvest maintains a higher level of many
vitamins and nutrients. |
